It's the year 2009 #pastfuturetechnology.
Wooo! I love the fact that Hitachi's line of LCD TV's is called this simple exclamation. The Hitachi HIY01, or in more lengthy terms Mobile Hi-Vision Cam WOOO, is Hitachi's media powerhouse for KDDI's au network. The phone is a CDMA2000-only phone but is able to roam on other global CDMA networks.
Honestly speaking, I had never even heard of Hitachi making phones for any of the three networks in Japan until recently, and in one of my deliveries last week – unbeknownst to me – I happened to have TWO of their devices included. Score!
So, what makes the HIY01 so special? According to the documentation, it was the world's first device to feature a mini-HDMI out connection which enables one to use the device as a media player. Purchased media or recorded HD content can be played back on any HDMI compatible monitor.
Speaking of recording, the video specs are impressive for a 2009 device and it comes in at a solid 720p @30fps, including STEREO audio recording. That is pretty advanced.
In the camera department we have a rather standard but decent 5Mpx camera which is topped off with an amazing 3x optical zoom module. Check out the images for yourselves.
For the rest of the handset, it offers the usual NFC Mobile Wallet, LISMO music service, au's pre-installed apps, etc. The three-way opening mechanism is similar to the one found on Panasonic's 930/931P on the SoftBank network.
