It's the year 2005 #pastfuturetechnology.
The Nokia 6680, or locally known as the 702NK II (the first 702NK was the 6630), was one of the first foreign 3G devices on the Vodafone network to try to get a foothold in Japan. The phone is relatively low-end in its hardware specs compared to local Japanese brands, but as a global roaming partner and Symbian ?smartphone" it allows for more customisations than the more tightly controlled handsets of Sharp & Co.
Falling outside of the usual form factor, it's a novelty device for the Japanese. A trend that Nokia would never be able to break, even with flip phones that were geared toward Japanese tastes.
One of the main reasons for this is that Japanese consumers had become dependent on the high-end specs of other brands that included 1Seg TV viewing and NFC payments via Osaifu Keitai. Both concepts were relatively foreign to Nokia handsets at the time, although Nokia did invest in NFC trials in the early 2000s but failed to commercialise it anywhere.
Nokia would eventually pull out of the Japanese market by mid 2008, never able to gain more than 0.3% of a market share in Japan, compared to the 40% it held globally at the time.
